How long does a skin tear take to heal?

By Margaret Hale, Reunoa EditorialLast updated

The short answer

Most skin tears heal in about two to four weeks with good care — a clean Type 1 tear with the flap in place often faster, a Type 3 tear with no flap usually slower. A skin tear that isn't healed after about four weeks should be checked by a nurse or doctor. Older age, infection, diabetes and poor circulation slow healing.

Older hands with thin skin resting on a garden table

It's one of the first questions after the bleeding stops: how long will this take? The honest answer is "usually a few weeks", but the type of tear and the person's health make a big difference.

A realistic timeline

TimeWhat usually happens
Day 0Bleeding stopped, flap repositioned, non-stick dressing on
Days 1–5Some redness and clear or pinkish fluid around the edges is normal; leave the dressing alone if it stays dry outside
Days 5–14A repositioned flap starts to stick down; open parts get smaller and pink
Weeks 2–4Most tears close; the new skin is thin and shiny
After 4 weeksIf not healed, have a nurse or doctor review the wound

These are typical patterns, not guarantees. In a 2024 hospital trial, 86% of skin tears treated with an adhesive silicone foam dressing were fully healed after three weeks, compared with 59% with a meshed silicone layer [2] — showing both that most tears do heal within weeks and that dressing choice matters.

Healing time by type

See skin tear classification for how to tell the types apart.

What slows healing

Aging skin repairs more slowly in general — inflammation, new blood vessel growth and collagen building all take longer [3]. On top of that:

How to help it heal faster

  1. Use a non-stick silicone dressing and leave it in place as long as advised [1].
  2. Mark the flap direction and peel off low and slow in that direction.
  3. Protect the limb with a sleeve or padded protector.
  4. Raise swollen legs when sitting.
  5. Eat enough protein (eggs, dairy, fish, beans) and drink enough fluids.
  6. Moisturize the intact skin around it to keep it supple — not the wound itself.

Will it scar?

Skin tears on older skin often leave a thin, pale or slightly shiny mark, sometimes with brownish discoloration if there was bruising underneath. Many fade over months. Protecting the area from sun and keeping it moisturized helps the new skin.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a skin tear take to heal in elderly people?

Usually around two to four weeks with good care. Type 3 tears, infections, diabetes and poor circulation can make it longer.

Is it normal for a skin tear to weep?

A small amount of clear or pinkish fluid in the first days is normal. Thick, yellow-green fluid, a bad smell or spreading redness can mean infection.

Why is my skin tear not healing?

Common reasons are infection, frequent dressing changes, repeated knocks, poor circulation, diabetes, steroids or poor nutrition. A tear not healed after four weeks should be checked by a nurse or doctor.

When can I stop covering a skin tear?

When the wound is fully closed and no longer weeping. Even then, keep the new skin protected with a sleeve for a few weeks — it tears easily.
