Does collagen help thin skin?
The short answer
Collagen supplements may help a little. Meta-analyses of randomized trials found oral hydrolyzed collagen improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo, usually after about 90 days. But the trials mostly studied wrinkles in women aged 20–70; there's no good evidence collagen makes thin skin bruise or tear less. Topical retinoids, sunscreen and moisturizing have stronger evidence.

Collagen powders and drinks are everywhere, and they're often marketed to people with thin, aging skin. Here's what the research actually supports.
What the meta-analyses found
- A 2021 meta-analysis of 19 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials (1,125 participants, aged 20–70, 95% women) found hydrolyzed collagen improved skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles versus placebo, typically after about 90 days [1].
- A 2023 meta-analysis also found significant improvements in hydration and elasticity, while noting several biases in the included trials and calling for larger studies [2].
What the trials did NOT study
- people over 70 (most participants were younger)
- skin thickness measured directly in fragile, elderly skin
- bruising, purpura or skin tears
So: collagen may make skin feel more hydrated and elastic. Whether it makes paper-thin forearms bruise or tear less is unknown.
How it might work
Collagen is broken down into small peptides and amino acids in the gut. Some peptides may signal skin cells to make more collagen. The body also needs vitamin C to build collagen [6], so a balanced diet matters.
What works better for thin skin
| Approach | Evidence for thin, aging skin |
|---|---|
| Topical retinoids | Increased procollagen in aged skin in an RCT [3] |
| Daily sunscreen | 24% less skin aging over 4.5 years [4] |
| Twice-daily moisturizer | Cut skin tears by almost half [5] |
| Oral collagen | Hydration and elasticity improved; no data on tears or bruising [1] |
If you want to try collagen
- Choose a hydrolyzed collagen product from a reputable brand.
- Give it about three months before judging.
- Treat it as an add-on, not a replacement for sunscreen, moisturizer and retinoids.
- Check with your doctor if you have kidney disease or take many medicines.
Food sources and collagen-building nutrients
Your body makes its own collagen from protein, and it needs vitamin C to do it. Practical food tips for older adults:
- Protein at every meal: eggs, dairy, fish, poultry, beans, lentils, tofu.
- Vitamin C daily: citrus, kiwi, berries, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes.
- Bone broth and gelatin contain collagen but haven't been studied as rigorously as hydrolyzed supplements.
If appetite is poor or weight is falling, talk to your doctor — low protein intake slows skin repair more than any supplement can fix.
Frequently asked questions
Does collagen really work for aging skin?
Meta-analyses suggest modest improvements in hydration and elasticity. Effects on thin, fragile skin, bruising or skin tears haven't been shown.
How long does collagen take to work on skin?
Most trials measured effects after 8–12 weeks, often around 90 days.
Is collagen or retinol better for thin skin?
Topical retinoids have more direct evidence for rebuilding collagen in aged skin. Collagen supplements may be an optional extra.
Can collagen help with easy bruising?
There's no good evidence. Bruising after 60 is mostly due to thin skin, sun damage and medicines.
Is collagen safe for older adults?
Hydrolyzed collagen is generally well tolerated in trials. Side effects are uncommon and mostly digestive. Check with your doctor if you have kidney disease or a protein-restricted diet.
Do collagen creams work?
Collagen molecules in creams are too large to rebuild collagen in the skin. They can act as moisturizers. Retinoids are the topical ingredient with evidence for stimulating your own collagen.
